Robert Ingersol was the greatest orator in American history. In honor of his August birthday, here are a few of his words to ponder and cherish. I need say no more.
“A fact never went into partnership with a miracle. Truth scorns the assistance of wonders. A fact will fit every other fact in the universe, and that is how you can tell whether it is or is not a fact. A lie will not fit anything except another lie.”
“Anger is a wind which blows out the lamp of the mind.”
“Few nations have been so poor as to have but one god. Gods were made so easily, and the raw material cost so little, that generally the god market was fairly glutted and heaven crammed with these phantoms.”
“Give to every human being every right that you claim for yourself.”
“Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so.”
“I am the inferior of any man whose rights I trample under foot.”
“If a man would follow, today, the teachings of the Old Testament, he would be a criminal. If he would follow strictly the teachings of the New, he would be insane.”
“Ignorance is the soil in which belief in miracles grow.”
“It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense.”
“Let us put theology out of religion. Theology has always sent the worst to heaven, the best to hell.”
“The true civilization is where every man gives to every other every right that he claims for himself.”
“An infinite God ought to be able to protect himself, without going in partnership with State Legislatures. Certainly he ought not so to act that laws become necessary to keep him from being laughed at. No one thinks of protecting Shakespeare from ridicule, by the threat of fine and imprisonment.”
Robert Ingersol was an outspoken man, beloved and worshiped by the masses. Some think he could have been President, but he was an atheist and free thinker. He would have lost then and now. But maybe someday there will be the right person and the right time. We have to keep looking.
